We are so proud to have Tom Kertscher in the Ex Fabula community. He’s incredibly kind, loves a good joke, and is always willing to lend a hand when needed.
Since high school, he’s wanted to make a difference in his community. Much of his inspiration is modeled after his heroic father, who did so much for others throughout his life. Tom’s passion for community and storytelling is made evident by his commitment to volunteering with various organizations such as Ex Fabula, Radio Milwaukee, Cabaret fundraising shows at St. Sebastian Parish, and his highly praised work as a journalist.
For over 35 years, Tom has professionally centered storytelling in his work as a newspaper reporter and freelance journalist. He worked for Milwaukee Journal Sentinel for 20 years and contributed to Milwaukee Magazine, Wisconsin Watch, and the Associated Press. Tom is also an author of several published books, including Brett Favre: A Packer Fan’s Tribute and Cracked Sidewalks and French Pastry: The Wit and Wisdom of Al McGuire. We are also proud to share that Tom has recently landed a new position as a Staff Reporter at Wisconsin Watch! Congratulations!
Tom is consistently engaged with Ex Fabula through membership and volunteering over the last 5 years. He recently debuted as an Ex Fabula emcee at StorySlam: Missed Connections, where his charisma and comedic timing shone bright between the storytelling. Indeed, we loved his dramatic reading of UltraShorts.
MC: Why did you decide to get involved with Ex Fabula?
TK: Ex Fabula is ordinary people telling real-life stories. It’s authentic and from the heart.
MC: Tom, do you remember telling your first story on the Ex Fabula stage?
TK: I can. It was about a great memory that ended and couldn’t be wrapped up in a bow.
He first graced the stage in April of 2023 at the Season 14 StorySlam: It’s About Time. He shared his experience with Heart to Heart video dating service. Video dating wasn’t always perfect or easy, though one connection led to his only trip overseas. His date had called him up and said, “Tom, I’ve recommended that you take my place as a chaperone.” Huh! That brief date led to Tom and his best buddy galivanting around Europe on a 25-day trip chaperoning history students. Years later, Tom still recalls this great experience and wanted to thank his date for the opportunity. He learned that Patty had died. He chose to tell this story as a way of thanking her for that life-changing opportunity. He concluded the story with “30 years later, I still cherish it. Thank you, Patty.”
Tom’s storytelling brings authenticity, humor, and carefully orchestrated suspense to the stage.
Our conversation shifted briefly to higher education and our shared experience as graduate students. Tom had landed an exciting opportunity to study (fully-funded!) at Ohio State University, where he pursued his Master of Arts in Journalism. He was one of eight students to receive a fellowship in Public Affairs Reporting. He chose Ohio for its on-campus experience and the opportunity to form a community.
MC: Tom, you’ve had the grad school experience. What advice do you have for a struggling grad student?
TK: Get to know your cohort. Those relationships will get you through the tough parts. And try to make it fun!
See what others have to say about working with Tom:
“I met Tom at the volunteer party and enjoyed the opportunity. He is wonderful, and I look forward to more conversations with him in the future.”
“You can tell Tom is a successful journalist. He listens deeply, observes details, and tells stories that show he cares – not only about the story but about the audience.”
I had a lovely time sitting down with Tom at Anodyne Coffee in the Tosa Village, where he shared his personal story and its arc through time. Thanks again, Tom, for dedicating your time to Ex Fabula. We’re honored to have you! Cheers.
