In Introducing Jess Betts: a loyal, honest, and generous fellow Sagittarius, hailing from Mukwonago, Wisconsin, where she grew up in a family that didn’t quite fit in with their neighbors. Jess delved into storytelling, theater, reading, and art at an early age; she’s always known she was a little bit different and found solace in art, which became a core aspect of her life.

Fast facts:

  • Jess is a dedicated darts player—you can find her playing with her league on weeknights.
  • She’s a big fan of Parks and Rec, 30 Rock, and The Office (British AND American version).
  • She’s a true Tina Fey fan (me too!)
  • She met her closest friends way back in middle school—they’re still her people to this day.

Jess recounts her first experience on Ex Fabula’s stage in 2015, where she shared a coming-of-age story of a 5th grader learning how to stand up to bullies. Since then, Jess has been hooked on Ex Fabula. She reminisces on her past role as the Ex Fabula stage manager; “It’s amazing how far Ex Fabula has come.” Back then, Jess earned $20 per show, had to beg audience members to tell stories, and often ended up on stage herself to fill out the program.

Jess acknowledges Ex Fabula’s role in expanding her horizons and challenging stigmas surrounding storytelling, emphasizing the importance of understanding the world around us. It can be difficult to get on stage, especially when the audience doesn’t look like you. Jess applauds brave storytellers who took a risk. It’s helped foster empathy and understanding in the Milwaukee community.

“When asked to share a story of something she’s proud of, Jess excitedly described her experience with Peninsula Players, America’s oldest summer theater run from Fish Creek, Door County. “It was non-stop hard work, but the best experience of my life!” She got a crash course in stage managing, costume changing, and ticket booth management,

She also talked about her deep connection with Next Act Theater here in Milwaukee, where she was able to direct a show for the first time. That led to 3 more years of directing!” Jess worked with Next Act for 8 seasons and really made that crew her theater family.

Jess shares what Ex Fabula has taught her over the years: “So much! I would have never gone to new places in Milwaukee without going with Ex Fabula. That allowed me to see different communities from a different angle.” Her personal philosophy fits here perfectly: “What’s the point of living if we don’t know [about] the things around us?”

These days, Jess can be found occasionally volunteering for Ex Fabula. We all know life gets the best of us, but we always welcome her back with open arms. My last question for Jess was “What advice would you give to someone who’s thinking about volunteering?” She knew just what to say. “Just do it! Human interaction is food for the soul; I always leave Ex Fabula events feeling a bit brighter.” Moral of the story: volunteering helps us, and it helps you!

Jess’s dedication to storytelling and community building is exemplified by her continued involvement with arts and theater. Her journey with Ex Fabula inspires all who seek to make a difference through empathy and connection. We’re so grateful for volunteers like Jess who enrich our communities with their passion and generosity. Give her a shout next time you see her at an Ex Fabula event!
