Trans Day of Visibility Statement

On Trans Day of Visibility Ex Fabula wants to make it clear that we stand with queer members of our community and of communities across this country. More than 400 anti-LGBT+ bills have been proposed this year and the majority of those attack Trans individuals. These bills are about hate and censorship and show an extremely concerning trajectory in our country. Basic rights that should be protected are being attacked and stripped from us by our lawmakers and so far we have been unable to stop it.
Ex Fabula has always been a radically inclusive space where there is no tolerance for homophobia, transphobia, racism, ageism, ableism, classism, xenophobia, or any other form of hate. These are the actions we are taking to protect our space and the people inside of it:
  • If anyone at an event uses hateful or discriminatory language, they will be asked to leave.
  • Queer community members are enthusiastically welcome to attend Ex Fabula events as their true authentic selves and are encouraged to share stories on our stage.
  • We will continue to prioritize partnerships with organizations that serve underrepresented communities.
  • We will continue to amplify queer stories on all of our platforms including our radio show Real Stories MKE.
In a world that continues to try to erase trans stories, we want to celebrate trans life, joy, and pride. Please enjoy these stories and UltraShorts from Milwaukee storytellers, and think about how you can show up for Trans friends, family, neighbors, coworkers and even strangers.

UltraShorts

Jen H:  Recently, my 17-year-old started destroying their room, punching holes in walls, kicking door off hinges, smashing windows, and breaking lamps and stuff. Stop attempting school and started smoking weed daily. When they implied that life might not be worth living, I made the tough choice to call the police and have them taken to a psych hospital for a week to keep them safe. How to navigate this was completely unknown to me, especially when it was disclosed that my kiddo was experiencing extreme gender dysphoria. So –  not gay –  as I had previously believed –  but transgender. As I  was tasked with assisting my kiddo in transition from female to male –  I called upon and found support from SO  many people in the community. We are on a good path now –  the unknown is becoming known. <3

A closeted Trans Kid- I know when I look in the mirror and smile, I don’t see a girl. My problem is getting my parents and everyone else to see it.

Kim- Once I went to Lloyd Barbee Montessori. I was sitting with a couple of 8-year olds and they began to fight about me. “He’s a boy,” said the boy. “She’s a girl,” said the girl. He’s a boy! She’s a girl! He’s a boy! She’s a girl! Finally, one of them asked me who was right. I said, “Well, I’m a girl, but I’m kind of a little bit of both. “Okay,” they said.
