Ex Fabula’s first event of 2012 will be Tuesday, January 10, 7:30 p.m. at the Bayview Brew Haus, 2535 S. Kinnickinnic Ave., Milwaukee. If you’ve never told a story before because you were nervous, or thought you wouldn’t know how, this will be a great event for you to take the stage as the theme is “Faking It.” Just pretend you are a master storyteller with warrior courage. We won’t tell.
Those interested in sharing a story on the “Faking It” theme are encouraged to arrive by 7:15 p.m. (at the absolute latest) to sign up. The storytellers will be drawn from the hat throughout the night and each will have five minutes to share his or her story. An audience favorite will be voted on at the end of the night and that person will be invited to tell a story at the Ex Fabula All Stars event at Turner Hall in June.
January 2012 is an extra special month for Ex Fabula with TWO events. Mark your calendars for the Terminal Milwaukee “Generation Gap” event, Saturday, January 28 atKochanski’s Concertina Beer Hall. Details to come.
Finally, if you missed the December Spectacular or would like to relive the amazing evening, check out the Spectacular Recap here.
I’m very disappointed to see that tonight’s performance venue excludes anyone under the age of 21. I’ve been trying to interest my teen-agers in storytelling and they’ve attended events at River West venue and Turner Hall. Imagine our surprise to have to dis-invite them to tonight’s performance! what’s the problem with 14-20 year olds attending?
Hi Maggie-
We’re very sorry that you’re disappointed by this. The Ex Fabula story slams originally started as and continues to run as, a monthly event that is held in a drinking establishment, in Milwaukee. We had decided early on that the material that comes from these particular events could be considered a bit more mature and can be ‘blue’ at times, and because of this, we were okay with establishing these events as adult only. However, the Stonefly Brewery venue is a restaurant bar where all ages are able to attend and we haven’t had any issue with anyone complaining to us about the material because we rarely have under aged persons at these events. We certainly do not go our of our way to promote these events to young adults and are sorry that we gave you the impression that these events were family friendly.
Please note that Ex Fabula is not going out of our way to disparage your kids from seeing story telling events. In fact, we are already thinking and planning out ideas for future events and workshops that are more suitable to younger adults.
Thank you for voicing your concern. We will discuss this at our next meeting.
Best,
Ex Fabula
